Sung A Chin

Born in 1967 in Handsworth, Birmingham, to Hindu Punjabi parents, Apache Indian, whose real name is Steven Kapur, emerged as a trailblazer in the music industry, seamlessly blending his Asian heritage with the rhythms of reggae. His musical journey symbolized a significant milestone for Asian youth and culture, echoing the vibrant multiculturalism of his hometown.

From Humble Beginnings to Global Stardom

Despite his humble origins, Apache Indian’s talent and dedication propelled him to international acclaim. With over 11 million albums sold and extensive world tours under his belt, he stands as a testament to the power of passion and perseverance in the face of adversity. His presence graced popular British television shows like Network East and Live and Kicking, while his music garnered seven top forty British hits, four Brit Award nominations, and prestigious accolades such as the Mercury Music Prize and Ivor Novello Award.

Championing Diversity and Empowering Youth

Beyond his musical prowess, Apache Indian is a beacon of inspiration and empowerment for the next generation. In 2013, he established the AIM Academy, a music academy based at the Handsworth campus of South and City College. Through this initiative, he mentors and nurtures young talents, imparting not only musical skills but also life lessons that celebrate diversity and foster community pride. With over 250 young participants, the AIM Academy recently earned recognition with the National Diversity Award for its exceptional contribution to youth development.

Reflecting on his impact, Apache Indian shares, “Hopefully my music will inspire the youth to be themselves and be proud of the community they live in and realize the importance of contribution and how that affects future generations.” Through his enduring commitment to fostering inclusivity and cultural pride, Apache Indian continues to leave an indelible mark on both the music industry and society as a whole.
